Nag Panchami

                               Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami is the rituals of worshipping Nag Devta (snake god) which is celebrated by Hindus. Nag Panchami falls in the month of Shrawan i.e (July – August) according to Hindu calendar. On the day of nag Panchami, nag statues , nag painting is being worshipped and pictures of Nag is glued above the main door of the house. It is believed the sticking Nag pictures above the door and worship of Nag Devta would be a blessing upon the family and brings positively or wellness in the family.
According to Mahabharat epic, snake sacrifice called Sarpa Satra was performed by the son of king named parikshita of kuru dynasty. It is said that king parikshita died by the bite of the snake king Takshaka. Later Janamejaya son of parikshita decided to perform a grand puja or Yagya to avenge the death of his father.

Sarpa satra was so powerful that made most of the snakes to lose their life in the fire pit of that sacrifice puja but Takshaka was nowhere to be found because he went to indra to seek help and protection of his life from that sacrifice. Janamejaya stood up and continued his sacrifice puja which ultimately brought god indra and takshaka in that sacrifice. God had no other no choice but to seek help from goddess Manasadevi to protect them from being sacrificed in that fire pit so goddess then requested his son Astika if he could do anything to help or stop sarpa satra. Hopefully astika's was successful to convince Janamejaya to stop the sacrifice yagya.Due  Astika's knowledge and intelligence life of lord indra, Takshaka and all the snakes were spared. Sarpa satra was performed in the month of shrawan so since that time worship was done for snake god and wish for the welfare of the family.
Nag Panchami is an auspicious occasion and it is celebrated by worshipping nag devta at home, sticking Nag pictures above the door, offering milk, flowers, fruits to Nag in different Nag statue. And in Nag Panchami mainly people from village offer maize to the nearby temple. There is a custom to offer green maize firstly to god and family started to have maize after offering it to god.

We learnt how we started to worship nag panchami as it has historical importance and it was continued to be followed till now but if we seek the fact biologically about the reason for the protection of snakes it carries different perspective. Snake are the creatures that has been helping us to balance the ecosystem as they maintain food web and control the population of rats and mice, helps in pest control as well.

To conclude, Nag Panchami is one of the Nepalese festivals which has its own cultural norms and values. Nag Panchami shows the importance of snakes and any creature that helps to balance the nature. Nag Panchami is such kind of ritual which has given a believe upon people that worshipping Nag devta would bring wellness in the family. Overall this culture has carried out cultural norms and values as well as biological values so far.
