According to Mahabharat epic, snake sacrifice called Sarpa Satra was performed
by the son of king named parikshita of kuru dynasty. It is said that king
parikshita died by the bite of the snake king Takshaka. Later Janamejaya son of
parikshita decided to perform a grand puja or Yagya to avenge the death of his
father.
Sarpa satra was so powerful that made most of the snakes to lose their life in
the fire pit of that sacrifice puja but Takshaka was nowhere to be found
because he went to indra to seek help and protection of his life from that
sacrifice. Janamejaya stood up and continued his sacrifice puja which
ultimately brought god indra and takshaka in that sacrifice. God had no other
no choice but to seek help from goddess Manasadevi to protect them from being
sacrificed in that fire pit so goddess then requested his son Astika if he
could do anything to help or stop sarpa satra. Hopefully astika's was
successful to convince Janamejaya to stop the sacrifice yagya.Due
Astika's knowledge and intelligence life of lord indra, Takshaka and all the
snakes were spared. Sarpa satra was performed in the month of shrawan so since
that time worship was done for snake god and wish for the welfare of the
family.
