Phobia and its types

Phobia is a kind of anxiety disorder which creates fear due to the encounter with some danger situation like height, certain animals, objects, insects and so on. Generally, most of the people are scare of minor things though they particularly may not feel that they have phobia of anything. According to the American Psychiatric Association, a phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. In most cases, the phobia involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm.  Phobia is related to psychology as it expresses the fear one has to suffer due the stage of mind. Sigmund Freud is known as the father of psychoanalysis and also a modern psychology. He has defined that the mind has three structure which is Id, Ego and superego where phobia is the outcome of the conflict what occur between Id and superego and Ego tries to manage the conflict of two structure.

Phobia can be of anything minor to the major ones as many people can have phobia of insects whether they are venomous or not and some people have major phobia that could lead them to have a serious issue like heart attack or trauma.  Some people are scared of heights, spiders, pubic speaking, being stuck on small area like lift and many more. While talking about types of phobia we might remember phobias like acrophobia, mysophobia and claustrophobia because of movies or series that we have watched so far. Hydrophobia is the fear of water and it mainly occurs if someone is suffering or diagnosed with Rabies and it is symbolized as hydrophobia because it makes people to have a fear of water and it is different from other phobias as it is caused by the bite of wild dog rather than a psychological fear.

Now let’s talk about the types of phobias, there are various kind of phobias that we might or might no have heard till now:

  1. Acrophobia: fear of heights
  2. Claustrophobia: fear of confined/enclosed space
  3. Agoraphobia:  anxiety disorder / fear of being in certain situations
  4. Arachnophobia: fear of spiders
  5. Entomophobia: fear of insects
  6. Mysophobia: fear of germs
  7. Ophidiophobia: fear of snakes
  8. Nyctophobia: fear of dark
  9. Scopophobia: fear of being stared at
  10. Spectrophobia: fear of mirror or reflection

Hence, phobia causes anxiety to people when they have to bump into the things or circumstances what they fear the most and some stay away from their fear whereas few seek the ways to overcome the fear. Phobia is not so extreme until it doesn’t make anxious from it as one can manage their fear by staying away from it and phobia might be a problematic if it began to give mental and psychological disorder because when a person is mentally disturbed than he/she has to suffer more from their fear. Creepy-crawly can be found in almost every part of the world and just because of our phobia we can’t simply kill them by using sprays and pesticides so all we can do is to be away from them. Some major phobia should be treated soon as they can cause serious health issues and may leads to deadly situation.
