Pride Month

An Annual celebration for paying tribute to stonewall riot by LGBTQ+ community along with their supporters which occurs in the month of June and last for a whole month is known as Pride Month. Pride Month is a way of expressing joy through various program as well a process of delivering message to the world to end discrimination based on gender. Everyone should be treated fairly and we should not use demeaning words to address LGBT+ group which could possibly hurt their feeling. Pride Month began after stonewall rebellion (it is the protest by gay community after the police raid in stonewall inn (gay/lesbian bar) in 28 June , 1969) and 28 June ,1970 was the first gay pride parade was organized in United States. Pride Month is celebrated in every June for a month.

In 1950s and 1960s gay, lesbian, transgender were ill-treated based on their gender and also due to people’s prejudice on how they see LGBT+ group of people they weren’t treated well. Police raid on stonewall inn in rebellious manner was one of the discriminations and as a result gay community tend to protest against such discrimination. First gay pride parade created a history as they somehow made a difference for the rights for LGBT+ community within united states as well as all round the world. Some countries have legalized same sex marriage through legislation, some countries allow through court decisions. Likewise, some marries same gender in the united states and apply K1 visa to stay there as well. Pride flag is one of the most important symbols for LGBT+ which consist different colors was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker where each color represents its own meaning. Pride flag colors meaning:  red - healing, yellow- sun, pink- sexuality, green- nature, indigo- harmony, violet- spirit, turquoise- art.

Purpose of celebrating Pride Month

  1. To honor stonewall riot which was held in 1969.
  2. To raise awareness for the discrimination of LGBT community.
  3. To end partiality and ideology based on gender.
  4. To urge basic rights, legal same- sex marriage and so on from the government.
  5. To seek justice and equal job opportunities for LGBT group.

Dealing with the gender issues with family is the greatest fear because of the preconception over the topic of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. Some families won’t be able to accept the fact that their children being born as gay, lesbian and so on which not only create chaos in the family but also the situation might turn into the separation from family. Pride month can generate various possibilities like legal rights, support of LGBT community, opinion of people can be change in positive way sooner or later. In present time, even well-known celebrities take part in pride month parade, program, and awareness rally which is making a difference in some way to encourage gay, lesbian, transgender to be able to deal with their gender issues with families and friends.

Hence, pride month is the celebration of LGBT group all around the world to remember the stonewall riot and those people who strongly raise voice against the discrimination towards gay and lesbian which has made a bridge worth for all of those who were ill-treated by the government and the people. Since 1969 till the present time perception of people has changed in some point on how third gender used to be taken as. Around 34 countries have laws on legal same- sex marriage and some countries are on the way to make laws for the benefit or rights of LGBT. Most of the western countries are becoming more flexible on gender equality and many Asian countries has passed laws based on gender without biasness of LGBT community. Developing country like Nepal has an organization named Blue Diamond society in order to support for the rights of LGBTQ+ community. Hope change may occur gradually for the benefit for every gender without any biasness and people may not discriminate third gender by any sort of mocking way. Happy Pride Month to all.
