      Ghode Jatra     Ghode Jatra is one of the annual festivals of Nepal which is basically celebrated in Kathmandu - Tudikhel. The word Ghoda refers to horse and Jatra means festival , so ghode Jatra is the festival of horses. Ghode Jatra is celebrated in the month of March - April. On the day of ghode Jatra Nepal Army performs various acts by riding horse, horse racing, horse parade, various performances can be seen in Kathmandu - Tudikhel ground. Public holiday is given in this day where most of the governmental office remains closed. "It is said that Gurumapa  - one of the demons used in live in Kathmandu and the kids started disappearing day by day which was believed to be because of Gurumapa so people tried various ways to scare Gurumapa but nothing could scare him and once people chased him upto Tudikhel ground where many horses ran towards Gurumapa which injured him and he finally got scared and ran away so Jhode Jatra was believed to be started since then".  During

Maghe Sankranti

 



Maghe Sankranti is one of the festival  among Hindu as well as some other ethnic groups like Tharu, Magar, Newar etc which is celebrated every year in mid- January(magh) . Maghe Sankranti festival can also be called makar sankranti as it is believed that since this day sun into Capricorn sign that is called makar in Nepali zodiac name. Maghe sankranti is also the indication of chance of season from cold into warmer days and also the starting of spring season. Maghe Sankranti can also be taken as the day of get together of family members and relatives. In India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated but the celebration differ from Maghe Sankranti and as long as we have known from movies or series Indian celebrates maker Sankranti by worshiping Sun along with Gayatri Mantra, by having 'Khichdi' and Laddu made from Sesame seeds, flying kites, special feast, bonfire, dancing etc. In India Makar Sankranti is mainly celebrated as the harvesting season which is quite different than Nepal.

 

Maghe Sankranti is mostly about having the special dish called cassava/yam(tarul), chaku(dish made with Jaggery, ghee and different nuts along with sweet potatoes, sweets/laddu made up with sesame seeds, meat and so on. “Poush ma pakya magh ma khanya’’ which means cooked in the last day of poush and is eaten in the first day magh is the well-known saying. Khichdi/khitro - the mixture of rice and lentils is also be eaten in maghe sankranti in some houses. In Kavrepalanchok in Makar Mela is organised that is in the gap period of 12 years. Similarly Tharu community celebrate Maghe Sankranti as their New year. 

Importance of Festival

  1. Festival helps to protect the culture and prevent it for the new generations.
  2. Festival itself brings joy and happiness and celebrations in the family.
  3. Festival can be a reasons of get together as family members, friends and relatives gather to celebrate it.
  4. Festival can also beneficial for business as it is the best time for selling particular foods, vegetables, flowers, sweets and so on during festival season.
  5. Festival are one of the attractions mainly for foreigners.
  6. Festival can be a specialty to promote our country Nepal.


Hence, Maghe Sankranti can be taken as one of the important festivals which has its Cultural importance and carries various beliefs accordingly. As we all know that Nepal is culturally diversified and festivals are the major strength to promote our country. Almost every ethnic group has their own festival which is celebrated in their own way and some festivals are celebrated by everyone despite the caste difference.  Happiness and sadness are the part of human which can't be denied as we have to face them no matter what so festival can be the greatest source of creating happy moments in our life that are worth to remember. Since childhood we began to celebrate festival and might be humourous, sad, happy, crazy memories that we remember till now and most of the memories are always the good one .
