Maha Shivaratri Brata

   Maha Shivaratri Brata

Maha Shivaratri Brata is the Hindi festival which is celebrated  annually on Falgun month ( February - march) by the devotees of lord shiva either by fasting or by performing puja.  Maha Shivaratri Carries various meanings where literal meaning means Maha - greatest, Shiva -Lord shiva, ratri - night, brata - fasting , but the overall definition of Maha Shivaratri brata means the greatest festival of lord shiva and his devotees as they observed this festival day and time time where some celebrate it by visiting shiva temple during day time and perform puja of lord shiva whereas some stay awake for the whole night by singing and dancing around bonfire, have various food and fruits like ber(Jujube fruit) beverages like Thandai - made from milk without hem plant and also be fixed with hem plant by some, bhang (hem) as a cigarette and many more. People stays awake for the whole night chanting Prayer for lord shiva and the celebrations is done for the whole night. Many people distribute food, fruits and sweets to people for free during Shivaratri festival.

In Nepal, Pashupati temple of Kathmandu is the renowned shiva temple where Maha Shivaratri is celebrated and on this day the area around Pashupati would be fully packed with people to observe puja and to celebrate shivaratri. Many Sadhu- Santa from India comes to Pashupati temple during Shivaratri and spends few days in the temple by meditating and spending simpliest time by praying. Sadhu are the devotees of lord shiva and a known as a gentleman who prefers simplicity whether its about food, clothes or shelters as they believe in living a simple life without privileges. Sadhus are taken as one of the simpliest devotees who does meditation and live in the simple cottage in the peaceful environment and most of the time sadhu lives near the shiva temples or around jungle areas.

Lord shiva is known as Saviour and the destroyer as he is believed to have both nature within him. The most dangerous thing lord Shiva has beside being saviour is anger and every god and goddess used to be scared when lord Shiva becomes angry as noone can calm his anger beside Mata Parvati and Tandav is known as the dance which is perform by lord Shiva when gets angry. During the period of Samundra Manthan deadly poison was generated which was said to destroy everything but lord Shiva consume it and stored in his throat and inorder to calm himself he had to meditate in mountain for long time. Consuming poison and protecting god and demons was his saviour form whereas lord shiva has killed many demons was his destroyer form.

Hence, Maha Shivaratri is one of th greatest festival for the devotees of lord Shiva as hindu followers celebrate the festival wholeheartedly by fasting and staying awake for the whole night. Lord shiva is said to fulfill our wishes if we observed the fast in genuine way. We pray for the welfare, prosperity, protection and many more. Lord Shiva is being prayed for many reasons but we have to learn to calm ourselves while having mood swings as anger can bring nothing positive for us. Hope everyone may celebrate the festival with positive energy, intention and no to make a habit of having thandai, Bhang ( anything related to hem as addiction) in the name of Lord Shiva. Last but not the least Happy Maha Shivaratri to all.
